Comments:
Jefferson was sent cuttings of the "Carolina Canada" peach by Timothy Matlack, who said "when fully ripe, [it is] the most juicy and highest flavored of the Clingstone peaches. It retains more of the peach flavour in brandy than any other." Named for its very large and lemon-shaped fruit, it was also known as "Kennedy's Carolina" and "Large Yellow Pineapple" peach. It was commonly sold in American nurseries beginning in 1790. It was still popular in California as a canning peach in the first half of the twentieth century.Text adapted from Fruit and Fruit Trees of Monticello by Peter J. Hatch.
