January 17, 1786, Jefferson wrote a letter from Paris to John Bartram in Philadelphia, requesting plants and seeds of many North American species, including Acer rubrum. The species were intended for Madame de Tesse. Jefferson also included "Red Flowering Maple. Acer rubrum" in Notes on the State of Virginia as an "Ornamental" species.
